چکیده

Problems of the following kind have been the focus of much recent research in the realm of parameterized complexity: Given an input graph (digraph) on n vertices and a positive integer parameter k, find if there exist k edges (arcs) whose deletion results in a graph that satisfies some specified parity constraints. In particular, when the objective is to obtain a connected graph in which all the vertices have even degrees – where the resulting graph is Eulerian the problem is called Undirected Eulerian Edge Deletion. The corresponding problem in digraphs where the resulting graph should be strongly connected and every vertex should have the same in-degree as its out-degree is called Directed Eulerian Edge Deletion. Cygan et al. [Algorithmica, 2014 ] showed that these problems are fixed parameter tractable (FPT), and gave algorithms with the running time 2O(k log k)nO(1). They also asked, as an open problem, whether there exist FPT algorithms which solve these problems in time 2O(k)nO(1). It was also posed as an open problem at the School on Parameterized Algorithms and Complexity 2014, Bȩdlewo, Poland. In this paper we answer their question in the affirmative: using the technique of computing representative families of co-graphic matroids we design algorithms which solve these problems in time 2O(k)nO(1). The crucial insight we bring to these problems is to view the solution as an independent set of a co-graphic matroid. We believe that this view-point/approach will be useful in other problems where one of the constraints that need to be satisfied is that of connectivity. 1998 ACM Subject Classification F.2.2 Nonnumerical Algorithms and Problems

The parameterised complexity of counting even and odd induced subgraphs

We consider the problem of counting, in a given graph, the number of induced k-vertex subgraphs which have an even number of edges, and also the complementary problem of counting the k-vertex induced subgraphs having an odd number of edges. We demonstrate that both problems are #W[1]-hard when parameterised by k, in fact proving a somewhat stronger result about counting subgraphs with a propert...

Efficient algorithms for finding critical subgraphs

This paper presents algorithms to find vertex-critical and edge-critical subgraphs in a given graph G, and demonstrates how these critical subgraphs can be used to determine the chromatic number of G. Computational experiments are reported on random and DIMACS benchmark graphs to compare the proposed algorithms, as well as to find lower bounds on the chromatic number of these graphs. We improve...

A More Complicated Hardness Proof for Finding Densest Subgraphs in Bounded Degree Graphs

We consider the Densest-Subgraph problem, where a graph and an integer k is given and we search for a subgraph on exactly k vertices that induces the maximum number of edges. We prove that this problem is NP-hard even when the input graph has maximum degree three.

Computing and Drawing Isomorphic Subgraphs

The isomorphic subgraph problem is finding two disjoint subgraphs of a graph which coincide on at least k edges. The graph is partitioned into a subgraph, its copy, and a remainder. The problem resembles the NP-hard largest common subgraph problem, which searches copies of a graph in a pair of graphs. In this paper we show that the isomorphic subgraph problem is NP-hard, even for restricted ins...

Frequent Subgraph Discovery

Over the years, frequent itemset discovery algorithms have been used to solve various interesting problems. As data mining techniques are being increasingly applied to non-traditional domains, existing approaches for finding frequent itemsets cannot be used as they cannot model the requirement of these domains. An alternate way of modeling the objects in these data sets, is to use a graph to mo...

Partitioning Graphs into Connected Parts

The 2-Disjoint Connected Subgraphs problem asks if a given graph has two vertex-disjoint connected subgraphs containing prespecified sets of vertices. We show that this problem is NP-complete even if one of the sets has cardinality 2. The Longest Path Contractibility problem asks for the largest integer ` for which an input graph can be contracted to the path P` on ` vertices. We show that the ...
